I saw the final Harry Potter movie last night and like most fans, I am feeling kinda sad that it’s all over. At least we have Pottermore to look forward to this fall. Seeing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 made me want to re-read and re-watch the whole series. If you’re feeling the same way, here are some quick links to find the books and movies in the library catalog and place a hold. The audiobooks are also extremely well done and Jim Dale is a joy to listen to.

Our library catalog now has some really great features. When you get to a book, it’ll not only tell you whether it’s in the library or not, but also help you find other books you’ll like! For example, I searched for Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. I got a list of ten similar titles and eight similar authors! Also, it shows links to a Jane Austen biography you can read online, articles about the book and author, and book discussion guides. Sometimes these new features take a couple extra seconds to load, so be patient! From home, a couple of these features require a WPL card number and PIN.
These features are made possible by a service called NoveList Select. The library subscribes to an online database called NoveList Plus. NoveList Plus has all kinds of wonderful information for readers. You can even pick which specific topics or moods you like in a book and it’ll help you find one! Bringing this content into the library catalog is just one way of making things easier on you, our patron! If you have questions about NoveList, please contact a Reference librarian at askref@wheatonlibrary.org.

If you didn’t already know, the library has other information resources besides books – and we want to tell you about them! The next time you search the online catalog, click on the Other Resources button next to a book you’re in interested in. A new window will open with a list of these other resources. You might see a link to Content Cafe where you can read reviews about the book, or you might see a link to Biography Resource Center where you can view biographical information about the author. Links to magazine articles, encyclopedias and other library catalogs are included too. Did your catalog search result in no hits? Click the Other Resources button at the top of the screen and you can try your search at any of the resources displayed in the window.
All resources are available to anyone from inside the library. From home, only Content Cafe and other library catalogs are available to anyone, but all resources are available to Wheaton Public Library cardholders where you will be asked to log in using your library barcode number and PIN. This is the same barcode number and PIN used to view your library account and to checkout materials at the self-checkout stations.
P.S. If you miss the Reviews & More button, click the Other Resources button then click Content Cafe. We didn’t get rid of the reviews – we just moved them.
