London: Beth Arrives
When the Romans invaded Britain in AD 43, it is believed that they came up the River Thames and established a military camp at what is now Westminster. A few years later, the trading port Londinium was built. The origin of this word is uncertain; it may come from the Indo-European word plowonida, meaning fast-flowing river. Over time the city has been called Lundenwic, Lundenburg, Lunden, Lundres, Lundonia (hence the U pronunciation we use today), Londres, Londonia and finally, London!
London, as we think of it today, is actually two historic cities: the City of London and the City of Westminster. Nowadays, it incorporates the surrounding communities to form Greater London, or simply London.
Not having a suitably impressive boat at my disposal, I landed at Heathrow Airport and took the Heathrow Express train (15 minutes) to Paddington Station. A short taxi ride and I was at my hotel, the wonderful Montague on the Gardens. I stayed here for my visit in 2008. Located in literary Bloomsbury, it is across the street from the world’s best treasure chest- the British Museum. Three underground tube stations are nearby which makes exploring London easy! At the north end of the street is Russell Square, where I can walk in the morning before breakfast. Walking in the opposite direction when leaving the hotel, the street ends at a Starbucks. Life is good!
I walked around the immediate area, re-acquainting myself with the streets, the tube stations and bus stops nearby. The fresh air felt good after the long flight!

Hear ye, hear ye! Be it known that I’m at the mercy of a wifi connection while I’m in London. I will do my best to keep these entries current. I may be a day or a week late with my adventures! Photos may have to wait until I return, so check back. Because the library gets a lot of spam, comments are not posted immediately. Someone at the library will be monitoring the posts. All errors are completely my fault, as I’m doing this on an iPad, on a small table, and racing before I lose my wifi connection!
